Julian Lage and Margaret Glaspy — Online

Buy Tickets $10 $10

Hailed as one of the most prodigious guitarists of his generation and “highest category of improvising musicians” (New Yorker), Julian Lage has spent more than a decade searching through the myriad strains of American musical history via impeccable technique, free association and a spirit of infinite possibility. Though only 31, the California-born New York-based musician boasts a long, prolific résumé on his own accord in addition to sideman (alongside such icons as Gary Burton and John Zorn) and duo partner (with Nels Cline, Chris Eldridge and Fred Hersch, among others.) Love Hurts – which marks Lage’s third Mack Avenue LP recorded with a trio, and his first to feature bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King (The Bad Plus) – sees the GRAMMY® nominated guitarist exploring the American song catalog from a truly unique vantage point, performing music written by a range of audacious and original artists, from Roy Orbison to Ornette Coleman, Jimmy Giuffre to Peter Ivers. On Margaret Glaspy’s long-awaited second album, Devotion, this highly acclaimed young artist reaffirms her status as one of the most sharp-eyed singer-songwriters of her generation while managing to audaciously reinvent her sound. She fearlessly defies expectations — and the results are exhilarating. Coming home after nearly three years on the road in support of her 2016 debut album Emotions and Math and the 2018 follow-up EP Born Yesterday, Glaspy was eager to challenge herself as an artist and start to make a new album with a clean aesthetic slate. Her bold experimentation has paid off, with tunes that are her most melodically confident, rhythmically compelling, and often incredibly romantic. The arrangements are unexpectedly lush at times, especially on the torchy “Heartbreak,” and often boast an impressive groove, on such tracks as “You’ve Got My Number” and the title song, “Devotion.” Glaspy announces her radical approach at the very start of Devotion, where digitally altered voices serve as the prelude to “Killing What Keeps Us Alive,” and she fills the album with surprising sonic touches, right up to the haunting electronics-and-voice soundscape of album closer “Consequence.”

“I’m walking down the street and there’s a door in the fence open and inside there are three women I’ve seen before…” Three old friends and a neighbor spend a summer of afternoons in their English backyard. Entwined histories, laughter, and song abound over tea and catastrophe. Caryl Churchill’s ESCAPED ALONE, directed by Loretta Greco, will be available to stream between October 19 and November 15, 2020. We hope that you will enjoy the linguistic virtuosity, dry humor and prescient genius that is Caryl Churchill — a writer who has been innovating and exploding the theatrical form for five decades," said Sonia Fernandez, Interim Artistic Director. "When we planned the season, “We are thrilled to bring Churchill’s work to Magic for the first time and center four mature women on our stage — we had no idea how timely this play would feel. ESCAPED ALONE conjures and represents the human need for connection, for storytelling, the yearning for and comfort in each other inside of a cataclysm. We are so pleased to offer ESCAPED ALONE as an audio play and share its message of resilience in the intimate space of our listening. The cast includes Anne Darragh as " VI," Julia McNeal as “MRS. JARRETT,” Elizabeth Benedict as “SALLY” and Anne Hallinan as " LENA." In addition to Ms. Churchill and Ms. Greco, the creative team includes Jake Rodriguez (Sound Design and Engineering), Jason Stamberger (Music), Jackie Hill (Production Manager) Designers Andrew Boyce (Set and Costume Design), and Chris Lundahl (Lighting Design) had begun work on the original planned stage production.

On the surface, THE HARRY AND SAM DIALOGUES appear to be philosophical discussions between two blue-collar types who are way out of their league, but their discussions are surprisingly lively. They use what they can from their own lives, like milk and Ding-Dongs, to make sense of what everything means. They discuss all the big questions: Is there life after death? How are men and women different? And, of course, if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? Directed by Miles Berman Starring Luke Matthew Simon and Patrick Olsen Brought to you by Invisible Girl Creative, in association with Miles Beyond Entertainment, and presented by Combined Artform, this production of The Harry and Sam Dialogues is an exciting new digital theatre experience. Mint Theater Company presents Conflict, a love story set against the backdrop of a hotly contested election. Miles Malleson combines his two great passions: sex and politics. The result is a provocative romance that sizzles with both wit and ideas. It’s the Roaring 20’s, London. Lady Dare Bellingdon has everything she could want, yet she craves something more. Dare’s man, Sir Major Ronald Clive, is standing for Parliament with the backing of Dare’s father. Clive is a Conservative, of course, but he’s liberal enough to be sleeping with Dare, who’s daring enough to take a lover, but too restless to marry him. Clive’s opponent, Tom Smith is passionate about social justice and understands the joy of having something to believe in. Dare is “the woman between” two candidates who both want to make a better world—until politics become personal, and mudslinging threatens to soil them all.

Ah, Thanksgiving, that most American of holidays: when families gather to celebrate the warmth of home, the bounty of the harvest — and a legacy of genocide and violent colonial expansion. A troupe of terminally “woke” teaching artists scrambles to create a pageant that somehow celebrates both Turkey Day and Native American Heritage Month. In this hilarious play by Larissa Fasthorse, good intentions collide with absurd assumptions in this wickedly funny satire.

Hell in a Handbag Productions once again takes on the classic 1970s disaster film genre with a totally ridiculous twist! Airport 1970SOMETHING is a parody that celebrates the popular ‘70s Airport disaster film series, edited and dubbed over with new dialogue by Handbag ensemble members and some of Chicago’s favorite performers. Watch the brave crew try to land a plane after flight 666 to Helena, Montana is hit by a small aircraft rendering the Captain (Grant Drager) blind and gravely injured. Can the ground crew (Michael S. Miller and Lori Lee) help Nancy, the Head Stewardess (Ed Jones*) land the plane? Will Nancy and her boyfriend (that she sometimes mistakes for her father) Al Murdoch (Michael Rashid) survive this test of their love? Will the beautiful and glamorous passenger, living legend Gloria Swanson (David Cerda), live long enough to add a new chapter to her autobiography? What about Linda Blair (Ricky Harris) or Myrna Loy (Doug Vickers), or the nun who looks suspiciously like Helen Reddy (Alex Grelle)? Fasten your seatbelts and board Airport 1970SOMETHING to find out.

On the night of the 1939 Oscars, Bette Davis returns home knowing she’s to lose Best Actress to Vivien Leigh’s Scarlett O’Hara, because the press has leaked the winners. Witness Bette triumph over misogyny to win roles and compensation on par with her male counterparts. See what happens when someone who always wins…loses. Through conversations with her mother Ruthie, her friendship with Olivia De Havilland, stories about her love affair with William Wyler, her four failed marriages, her unpleasant relationship with her daughter, ageism in Hollywood, and her feelings of regret about her groundbreaking court case with Warner Brothers (which she lost), we experience Bette’s most defining moments and her at her most vulnerable. What do you know about the man the Teddy Bear was named for? President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt is one of the most fascinating people of the 20th century. Phil Johnson stars in this new one-man show and brings this multi-faceted character to life in a truly riveting, energetic, and passionate performance. In this gripping 90-minute presentation, the new president grapples with the issues that would define his term: taking on the trusts, trying to get his message across to the people, and his colossal challenge – the coal strike of 1902. Miners and others were killed, tensions were high, and - the biggest threat of all - innocent people were at risk of freezing to death that winter. This American president dealt with these in his own relentless energetic way. He was a great man, a great American. By the way, TR was not a fan of the nickname “Teddy!”

The dazzling Lucy Darling (performed by Carisa Hendrix) is ever the traveling magical socialite, however with the changing global conditions comes her new interactive online show A Fun Night In With Lucy Darling. Delivering every bit of Lucy’s delicious wit, wonderful magic and sparkling humor directly into your very own home, this show is simply a treat and was the shining highlight of my week. This show contains Lucy’s trademark flair with magic (especially cocktail magic) plus some fun comedy segments that featured audience interaction/participation. I do not want to give too much away — you must simply watch this show for yourselves! The audience interaction segments made me laugh the most and enhanced the audience’s connection with the show. In a time where connections via technology can seem distant or remote at times, I felt that wasn’t the case here. Audience members were encouraged to dress up for the show and they did not disappoint, with some very polished and stylish outfits on display (along with some curious props and accessories). A Fun Night In With Lucy Darling also features Lucy’s household managers (butlers?) – Laurence and Marcy – who are amusing and entertaining themselves / as a duo without taking too much attention away from Lucy. I particularly enjoyed the dancing and their facial expressions. Laurence and Marcy are constantly helpful but also have some lashings of sass / personality themselves which I enjoyed. Be sure to (virtually) invite Lucy Darling into your home for refreshing hour of fun, magical entertainment.

Ranked by TripAdvisor as one of the top 10% of attractions worldwide and Yelp’s best rated performing arts event in Washington DC, The Magic Duel is launching a live, streaming version. After 5 years of highly rated live shows, this 60-minute, virtual performance will soon pit magical boomer Mark Phillips against conjuring zoomer Ryan Phillips in a duel for the title of DC’s Best Magician. More than a magic show featuring 2 world class magicians, the Magic Duel is part AGT, part Survivor and part Top Chef (without the yelling or the food). Delivered directly to your living room, this live, streaming conjuring competition lets audience members choose the challenges, judge each magician’s efforts, and vote for their favorite! Audience members can purchase participant tickets to interact directly with the performers via Skype, making decisions that affect the outcome of tricks or having their minds read remotely and in real time! In addition, the format of a virtual show means most of the magic performed will be skill based sleight-of-hand popularized by stars of magic like Shin Lim. This is your chance to see what magicians call “finger-flinging” up close on screen. Each ticket serves as admission for a single household; families are welcome and the magic is designed to entertain ages 12 and above.

A favorite on the nationally syndicated Bob and Tom Radio Show, Greg has also appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Comedy Central, CBS, ABC, FOX, MTV and CMT. Greg Hahn has parlayed his absurdly energetic, all out style of physical humor, one liners and crowd work into a performance of immediate pandemonium and continuous laughs. His unique stylings have led to numerous television, corporate and theater appearances throughout the US and Canada. Greg was raised in South Florida where in high school he amused the Catholic nuns by poking holes in his pockets enabling pencils to shoot out of his pant leg. As a college basketball player, his enjoyment of half court shots earned him a sweet spot on the bench. As a Captain in the Marines Corps, Greg kept his men highly motivated and could not overemphasize that camouflage is continuous. While a buyer for Lockheed Corporation, he thought “Why make $200 a day, when I can be a comedian and make that in a week?” After several serious jobs where he refused to be serious, Greg turned pro as a stand up comedian and landed a job as emcee for a theme park lumberjack show. This supplied him with four audiences a day, intoxicated ax swinging lumberjacks, and a log rolling dog.

Party at the End of the World is a hybrid video game/live performance. Explore a virtual 2D play space at-will while embodying a virtual avatar. Controlled with arrows on the keyboard, these avatars pass each other in the 2D universe, and real-life video chats surface! The immersive design and platform of Party at the End of the World drops you in the midst of a magical universe living atop our current world and allows you to choose how you engage with the show. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can choose to become part of the story by engaging with the artists, joining the live actors on their personal journeys, and participating in real acts of compassion through a fictional story. While many interactions are live, you can also interact with pre-recorded “non-player” characters to create your own journey, and decipher the mysteries independently of the live show.

Joy — Online

A smile is the same in any language, Joy is no different. How can we find joy when it feels like our world is falling apart? And why does art bring us joy? Let’s be honest — things really suck right now. Literally on one side of the country there are fires everywhere. On the other side, we’re experiencing floods. The election is near. And we hear about it every day on repeat. The world is unprecedentedly connected in this time of collective darkness. What we need is hope, but where can that be found? Through experiencing joy. Yet joy is not a passive experience. You have to pursue it. Watch and discover two electric performers do what brings them joy — performing — and let it be a spark that ignites joy in you. #findyourjoy. This production will be performed in separate but parallel versions conceived and adapted by Christopher Rushing and presented via Zoom. Veteran company member Vato Tsikurishvili (directed by Paata Tsikurishvili) and audience-favorite Maria Simpkins (directed by Katherine DuBois) star in Joy, an intimate, autobiographical experience about Maria and Vato’s own discovery of joy in their lives. Tickets with Hand-Selected Prop Boxes include interactive items that you can use over the course of the show.

Deep Dive: Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt — Online Series

Buy Tickets $125 $250

In its most ambitious addition to the Fall season, Court Theatre’s Deep Dive: Leopoldstadt provides an in-depth examination of Tom Stoppard’s epic drama, Leopoldstadt. Leopoldstadt is a place, a state of mind, and a return. Stoppard’s newest play is as groundbreaking and sprawling as anything he has written. Combining the personal and philosophical, the play explores both history and Stoppard’s own Jewish heritage, discovered late in his life. Over the course of five seminars, participants will examine the world of Leopoldstadt, which opens in Austria in 1899 and culminates in 1955, through discussions with University of Chicago professors about the history and politics of Vienna during that time, the influence of Austrian Jewish intellectuals and artists, and Jewish migration and identity. Deep Dive will culminate in an online reading of the play helmed by Court Artistic Director Charles Newell, whose previous productions of Stoppard’s works have garnered critical acclaim, as well as an audience talkback enriched by the knowledge participants have gained from each seminar.

A War of the Worlds: Live Virtual Audio Drama

Buy Tickets $10 - $25 $10 - $25

Theatre in the Dark Presents: an original audio drama adaptation of H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds, performed live online. In this 90-minute live virtual audio drama, H.G. Wells enters the 21st century as a science journalist thrust into the events of an alien invasion from the “Red Planet” Mars. Actors play dozens of characters in a theatre experience unlike any other, created by a company critically-acclaimed for its “innovative,” “elaborate,” and “viscerally compelling” storytelling. The new script, A War of the Worlds, was written by company founders Corey Bradberry and Mack Gordon. While it follows the contours of Wells’ story of a Martian invasion, it moves the action to present-day Chicago. Separated from family, friends and everything they’ve ever known, the eclectic cast of Chicagoland characters must do everything in their power to survive as our world comes crashing down around them. As the Martians reveal their deadly Heat-Ray and their true intentions, whirling our characters into hair-raising chases across Chicago one question remains: is life on Earth doomed? Director Bradberry says, “A War of the Worlds is a virtual audio drama for audiences to enjoy alone or in small groups from their own home as people did in the golden age of radio. Relax and settle into a dark space with wine and food before submitting to the horrifying thought of an invasion from another planet.” All you need to enjoy the show is a working computer, a stable internet connection, and your favorite headphones/speakers!

The Waiting Period is an unrelenting look at a 10-day period in Copeland’s life — the mandatory 10-day waiting period before he could lay his hands on the newly purchased gun with which he planned to take his own life. Even in the midst of this tragedy, however, his wonderful sense of the comedy of life does not desert him (how much should he spend on the gun?), indeed serves him insidiously well as a buffer against the grim reality of his intention. Copeland hopes this very personal, and ultimately redemptive, story will reach people who struggle with depression — often called the last stigmatized disease — as well as their families and loved ones. Interspersed with interviews with other sufferers, the play, like so many Marsh stories, also offers outsiders an insider’s view, thereby expanding our understanding and, hopefully, our humanity. As critic Sam Hurwitt put it in The Idiolect: “It’s a play I’d strongly recommend to anyone who is now or has ever been depressed or who knows someone in that situation. But honestly, it’s such a strong piece that I’d recommend it just as heartily to anyone who’s ever been human.”

Bandhas and Bravery: The Art of Arm Balancing — Online

Buy Tickets $40 $45

The ability to arm balance goes far beyond strong arms and a strong core. While they can be mystifying and scary, when approached correctly, they are exhilarating, empowering and fun! It takes courage, bravery and confidence coupled with the proper internal elements to begin to soar on our hands. In this workshop, we’ll create proper awareness and engagement of our bandhas (the internal energy locks that are the foundation of our core strength) as well as building basic shoulder and arm alignment that will be carried forth to full arm balances. Hilaire will guide students through a sequence that will prepare the foundation necessary to do these poses with ease and freedom. This class is for those challenged by arm balances and for those who love them! In working towards our potential in these poses, we empower ourselves physically, mentally, and emotionally by cultivating inner confidence and trust. All levels welcome!

Guided Meditation Workshop — Online

All too often forgotten is the reason behind asana (postures) — the ability to sit in meditation. We exist in a demanding world where multi-tasking and overbooking ourselves is expected. The pace of life leaves us not only physically exhausted but with a busy, cluttered state of mind. Through the practice of meditation, we can begin to bring awareness to the “busy” and detach from emotional holdings related to past events or anxiety for the future. Practicing mindfulness allows us to more readily access this state of being regardless of what is going on around us. Hilaire will help us focus on techniques to flip this dark, lethargic energy to lightness and laughter. We will spend time discussing why we find ourselves being so heavy and the choice we have to effectively pull ourselves out of the rabbit hole. No prior meditation experience is necessary, all levels welcome.

Join me for a virtual tour of the Hermitage, one of the most famous museums in the world, located in St. Petersburg, Russia. See the room where Catherine the Great had private parties so secret that even servants were not allowed to attend and where the decor is so stunning you will not want to leave (in the picture). Visit the private rooms of the last Russian tsar, Nicolas II, rooms where he spent time with his beautiful wife Alexandra, rooms visited by Rasputin, and rooms where the famous Princess Anastasia lived. I have some amazing historic photos from that time that I will show during the tour! Learn about some amazing world-class art, such as Da Vinci, Rafael, Rembrandt, Caravaggio, and more. All of this in beautiful palace-worthy interiors designed in the 19th century specially to house this jaw-dropping art. Enjoy an exclusive view of the crown jewels, including Catherine the Great’s diamonds, in the Diamond room (not everyone knows about that amazing space!). Be surrounded with the splendor of gold, marble, granite, malachite, and more gold, because you are in Russia, and our royal family was super wealthy. Have a private showing of a famous clock that you probably wouldn’t see working, even if you were at the Hermitage in real life right now (or really, any other time!)

We are not a group, village, networking, mastermind, peer group, peer advisory group, chamber, association, hub or club. Eliances is a destination “Where Entrepreneurs Align™” The community hosts weekly ROUNDtable meetings enabling entrepreneurs and inventors alike to collaborate and help each other with ventures. The ROUNDtable is one of the puzzle pieces of Eliances where action takes place. A Valley CEO explained that “Eliances moves networking from a passive exercise to active engagement. At its core, Eliances is as much about what can one contribute as what can one receive, and fundamentally it’s that balance between give and get that creates true value.” It brings together a “high-level community of hybrid entrepreneurs with resources, influence, skills, contacts and imagination.” There is no other community structured by the implications and operations that comprise Eliances. Eliances operates on what they refer to as the 3G methodology™: Got, Give and Get. Every week, each attendee is given a 60-second window of time in which to pitch their respective G’s. This high pressure scenario allows Eliances members to analyze and optimize the caliber of attendance each week; because regardless an individual’s status, there is no guarantee an invite to the next event.
