School of Rock: Hit Film Turned Musical

Buy Tickets $39 - $69 $69 - $89

Still head-banging on Broadway, School of Rock is ready to shred at Hollywood Pantages. This New York Times Critics' Pick was adapted from the 2003 film that launched Jack Black as a full-blown star, and just happens to feature 14 new songs from the King of the Musical, none other than Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. All the original tunes from the film are included too, and Entertainment Weekly called this stage version "an inspiring jolt of energy, joy and mad skillz." The show follows Dewey Finn, who was kicked out of his band and is struggling to make ends meet when he finds himself in the most unlikely of jobs -- teaching at a prestigious prep school. When he discovers his students' talent for classical music, he decides to steer them over to rock 'n' roll, turning this class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, mind-blowing, kick-ass band. Awesomeness ensues. Get "way hardcore" and snap up your tickets to this rocking musical.

Hostage: Iran Hostage Crisis Drama

Buy Tickets $7.50 - $32.99 $15 - $39.99

"Personal. Unexpected. Timely." With the 40th anniversary of the Iran hostage crisis coming up next year and our president's decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal, it seems like a good time to tell the story of an ordinary family that made an enormous geo-political situation very, very personal. Worlds collide in this human drama about the backlash one family must endure when it has the courage to make the political very, very personal. Based on true events, Hostage is the story of a mother dealing with the aftermath of traveling to Tehran to gain the release of her son, a marine held captive during the Iran hostage crisis. Playing at the Skylight Theatre in Los Angeles, Hostage was written by the award-winning Michelle Kholos Brooks and is directed by Elina de Santos.

L.A. Phil Performs Schumann's Cello Concerto

Buy Tickets $56 - $91 $80 - $130

Robert Schumann's musical talent was so great that he left his job as a lawyer to make a living as a virtuoso pianist -- but when a hand injury ended that dream, the tormented genius threw himself into composing instead, creating some of the most celebrated works of the Romantic era. In this performance by the L.A. Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Gustavo Dudamel conducts three of Schumann's compositions: Overture to Genoveva, drawn from Schumann's first and only opera, Cello Concerto in A minor, featuring Argentine solo cellist Sol Gabetta, and his Symphony No. 3, which is notable for its inclusion of a fifth "extra" movement.

Two legendary powerhouses of funk are coming together at the equally legendary Greek Theatre in Los Angeles for a thrilling night of '70s hits. Multi-platinum crossover phenomenon WAR is a musical melting pot whose blend of rock, jazz, Latin and R&B has transcended the barriers of race and culture. WAR's hits "Spill the Wine," "Why Can't We Be Friends" and "Low Rider" are some of the most recognizable songs of the '70s -- and in this concert they join forces with the group responsible for another bevy of famous beats. George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic revolutionized R&B in the '70s by blending in acid-rock elements pioneered by the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa -- with tremendous results. With three platinum albums to their name, not to mention a bevy of hit singles like "Atomic Dog," "One Nation Under a Groove" and "Give Up the Funk," the group's genre-spanning success saw them inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Funkify your life when these two spectacular groups come together at one of L.A.'s most famous venues.

Ah, adolescence -- your parents drive you crazy, school is a drag, and you just discovered the seeming all-consuming importance of sex. With insanely catchy songs like "The B**ch of Living" and "Totally F**ked," this rock musical remix of a scandalous 1891 German play is a thoroughly modern take on the universal messiness of growing up. Now Cupcake Theater brings this bold and poignant modern classic to North Hollywood.

Boeing Boeing: Hit Comedy Takes Off in Santa Monica

Buy Tickets $11.50 $23

In this sexy French farce, it's the 1960s and Parisian womanizer Bernard is enjoying the good life with his three fiancées -- all beautiful airline hostesses with frequent (but never overlapping) layovers in Paris. And thanks to Bernard's faithful housekeeper, who nimbly switches out photos and favorite foods in his apartment according to schedule, the women will never find out about each other. All is going great, until a new, faster Boeing jet throws the airline schedules out of whack and Bernard finds himself juggling all three women at once. Add Bernard's friend -- who's hilariously bad at keeping all the lies straight -- to the mix, and the whole plan is poised to fall apart. This slapstick comedy from French playwright Marc Camoletti won a Tony on Broadway and was made into a 1965 film starring Tony Curtis and Jerry Lewis. Now you can laugh along with all the saucy fun at this production of Boeing Boeing at Santa Monica's Morgan-Wixson Theatre.

Walk On By is an epic, romantic, dramatic comedy set in the swingin' '60s of London, featuring the songs of Burt Bacharach and performed by the Silverlake Children's Theatre Group. London in the '60s was the center of one of the most colorful and stylized moments in world history. A youth-driven cultural revolution emphasizing modernity, optimism, creativity and fun-loving hedonism made London the global hub of art, music and fashion scenes. Against this vibrant backdrop, Walk On By weaves various love stories that take place on New Year's Eve, 1967, culminating in the city's spectacular celebration in Trafalgar Square. Using the template of the movie Love, Actually, multiple storylines -- happy, sad and bittersweet -- will overlap and intersect in the space of this one special day. Filled with songs like "What's New Pussycat," "I Say a Little Prayer," "What the World Needs Now is Love" and many more, this youth production can be enjoyed at the Assistance League Playhouse in Los Angeles.

Suspense mounts as the plot begins to twist and turn with devilish cleverness, and with such an abundance of thrills and laughter, that audiences will be held enthralled until the final, startling moments of the play. Directed by Jules Aaron and produced by Larry Eisenberg, see Deathtrap at the Lonny Chapman Theatre in North Hollywood.

In 1858, on a plantation in Georgia, a young mother is suddenly sold, leaving behind her husband and their five-year-old son. Through a magical evening of storytelling, music and dance, their community shares the rich history that makes them so much more than slaves. The sharing of this rich oral tradition not only comforts the father and son, but heals and strengthens the entire community as the audience has the privilege of going along for the ride. Flight is an inspirational theatrical experience for the whole family, as the characters share their empowering stories -- based on actual slave narratives -- as well as African and African-American folktales. Watch it all unfold on the MainStage of the Long Beach Playhouse.

Inspired by poet Walt Whitman's experiences tending to wounded soldiers during the Civil War, this haunting, compassionate work by Matthew Aucoin, LA Opera's Artist in Residence, explores the connections that come between us and pull us apart. As Whitman listens to wounded veterans share their memories and messages, he forges a bond with an enigmatic young soldier. Their encounter forces him to examine his own role as a writer and poet. Intricately scored for chamber orchestra, with beautifully detailed choruses, Crossing shines in this special concert performance at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts featuring Rod Gilfry as Whitman and conducted by Aucoin himself.
