The Shins: Indie-Rock Gods at the Greek

Buy Tickets $30 - $39.50 $39.50

The Shins are a multiple Grammy nominated American band formed by James Mercer in Albuquerque in 1996. After a few years of self-financed singles, demos and van tours, the band was signed by Sub Pop Records who subsequently released its first three full length records. They helped redefine what indie rock could be, trading in low-fi grit for quirky pop melodies on earworms like "New Slang," "Know Your Onion!" and "Caring is Creepy." Four albums, millions of sales and a couple Grammy nominations later, The Shins and frontman James Mercer are still pushing the boundaries of indie rock. Their new album, Heartworms, brings their trademark insanely catchy melodies and wraps them up in ambitious, layered soundscapes. Don't miss it when The Shins hit the stage for this concert under the stars at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.

Our Town: Pulitzer-Winning Drama Starring Jane Kaczmarek (Malcolm in the Middle)

Buy Tickets $20 - $65 $25 - $92

Proclaimed "the greatest American play ever written," Thornton Wilder's Our Town looks at the power of life and death even in the brightest and most unassuming of settings. Winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1938, this hard-hitting drama finds young lovers George and Emily grappling with lost potential, the sacrifices one makes for love and the beauty found in life if you look hard enough. Narrated by the nameless Stage Manager, the actors perform this profound drama with minimal props or set, often breaking the fourth wall to address the audience directly. Don't miss this groundbreaking new production of the iconic play, which stars Jane Kaczmarek (Malcolm in the Middle) and is co-produced with Tony-nominated Deaf West Theatre and performed in both American Sign Language and spoken English.

Arsenic and Old Lace: Murderously Funny Classic Stage Comedy

Some seniors take up golf, others enjoy painting, but only a select few devote their golden years to that most ancient of hobbies: murder. Arsenic and Old Lace introduces a pair of kindly spinsters who poison lonely old men and bury them in the basement. They're joined in their charm and eccentricity by one nephew who believes he's Teddy Roosevelt and another who's an escaped convict resembling Boris Karloff. Into this madhouse wanders another nephew, the relatively sane Mortimer, who must negotiate all this craziness while preserving his relationship with his new fiancée -- and without calling in the cops. U2 Wait for Pizza in Wild Waiting for Godot Spoof

Buy Tickets $7.50 $15

U2 frontman Bono orders a pizza delivery in a desperate attempt to find what he's looking for: a link to his working class roots. That's the set-up for this trippy, award-winning parody of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot. The Irish icon waits in his castle (presumably located where the streets have no name), wracked with guilt over his own success and longing to discuss "real life" with the delivery person. But bandmate The Edge wants no part of his socio-spiritual experiment and rejects any criticisms of his hard-earned rock star life. This surprisingly deep comedy skewers celebrity culture, blind faith and pretentious theater while searching for the meaning of art in a hyper-capitalist society. Watch rockers wax faux-philosophical when fringe fest favorite Bono and The Edge Waiting for Godomino's comes to the Whitefire Theatre in Sherman Oaks.

Patti Austin: The Apollo Theater Celebrates Ella's 100th

The Apollo Theater goes from Harlem to Hollywood for one special night in celebration of Ella Fitzgerald's centennial birthday. The legendary First Lady of Song was the first female performer ever to win the Apollo's amateur contest at the tender age of 17 -- and it also happens to be where R&B songstress Patti Austin made her childhood debut as well. Though Austin may be best known for her '80s soul-pop hits "Baby, Come to Me" and "How Do You Keep the Music Playing" with James Ingram, she's since segued into a career as one of the country's most sought-after jazz singers, winning a Grammy for her 2008 disc Avant Gershwin and releasing her own best-selling salute, For Ella, which includes favorites like "Satin Doll," "Miss Otis Regrets," "The Man I Love" and "A Tisket, A Tasket." She's set to be joined under the stars at the Ford Theatres by fellow vocalists Monica Mancini and Ledisi under the direction of Grammy-winning producer Gregg Field, Fitzgerald's former drummer.

Trouble in Mind Explores Race Relations With Cutting Comedy

Buy Tickets $12.50 - $19.25 $25 - $38.50

Alice Childress' humorous yet heartbreaking look at race follows a cast of black and white actors attempting to mount a production of a "progressive" new show on Broadway in the 1950s. The play-within-the-play, an anti-lynching drama set in the South, marks the first opportunity for gifted black actress Wiletta Mayer to break through on Broadway -- but only if she can quiet her conscience when she realizes that the play may actually perpetuate the very stereotypes it's supposed to protest. This "scathingly funny, wise and extraordinary" (Washington Post) satire was written in 1955 at the dawn of the civil rights movement by Childress, and she became the first African-American woman to receive a professional production in New York. Enjoy this insightful exploration into race relations under the stars at the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga.

Set in 1914 Berlin, the solo play follows young Albert Einstein as he struggles to prove his General Theory of Relativity, while his personal life -- new fatherhood, a wife who won't agree to a divorce, failing health -- and society crumble around him due to the Great War. Told with humor and heart, Einstein! draws on the recent release of 15,000 documents and Fry's three years of research to show a side of the genius that's rarely seen.

A gorgeous male prostitute. A tough-talking taxi driver. A teenage dreamer. Everyone's looking for something they can't find in this US premiere of acclaimed British playwright Simon Stephens' (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) strange and beautiful play that re-imagines Bizet's opera Carmen, exploring the possibility of love in a fractured urban world. Using broken shards of Bizet's opera, this stunning show fashions a mosaic of monologues about our infatuation with technology and digital communication, less a re-creation of the opera than a deconstruction of it, reflecting on the strangeness of a professional singer's life and the aching disconnection at the center of our atomized contemporary world. Rhinoceros: Absurdist Comedy Skewers Mob Mentality

Buy Tickets $15 - $17 $30 - $34

Eugene Ionesco was the master of the Theater of the Absurd, a dramatic genre where the world is incomprehensible and anything can happen. His play Rhinoceros, at Pacific Resident Theatre in Venice, is set in a small village where the inhabitants are transforming, one by one, into rhinoceroses. Only Bérenger, the central character, seems immune to the metamorphosis. The Los Angeles Times praised Rhinoceros for its "precise comic timing and cleanly individuated characterizations." Written during the aftermath of World War II, the Ovation Recommended play served as a harsh criticism of the circumstances that led to widespread acceptance of fascism and Nazism. To this day, it remains a pointed and timely critique of conformity, mass culture and allowing society to set the definition of morality.

Known as much for his volcanic temper as for his work in film and on stage, the phrase "difficult actor" could well've been coined for Klaus Kinski, the German star most famed for his mercurial, multi-film collaboration with director Werner Herzog (Aguirre, the Wrath of God, Nosferatu). Kinski died in 1991, but writer-performer Andrew Perez (David Miscavige in My Scientology Movie) brings him back to life in this 2017 Hollywood Fringe Festival Encore Award-winner to complete the actor's magnum opus, a one-man show about Jesus Christ, which was driven off stage by outraged theater-goers. In addition to the performance of The Second Coming of Klaus Kinski, the Blank's Second Stage Theater will host an exhibit featuring relics, curios, film installations, live conversations and more about the actor.
