To hear songs like "I Wonder," "Sugar Man" and "Inner City Blues" for the first time is to discover lost rock classics. For decades, their creator was virtually unknown, working construction back home in Detroit. Little did he know, he'd become a musical legend in apartheid South Africa, where his music inspired a generation, outselling even Elvis. That all changed when the Oscar-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man came out in 2012, reintroducing Rodriguez to the world. Since his return, he's toured all over the globe and opened for Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. Now Rodriguez brings his gift for melody and surreal anti-establishment poetry to Mountain Winery in Saratoga for this concert under the stars.

Tomfoolery: The Wicked Words and Mischievous Music of Tom Lehrer

Buy Tickets $10 - $37.50 $20 - $50

Tom Lehrer epitomized the era of satirical humor in the 1950s and 1960s, writing songs which were wickedly naughty yet not x-rated by today's standards in any way. What is most amazing about Lehrer's music is how timeless it has remained, dealing with subjects such as religion, love and nuclear weapons without in any way dating the material. Turned into a musical revue by the producing genius behind Cats and Phantom of the Opera, Cameron Macintosh, Tomfoolery still is one of the most bitingly hilarious two hours of music you will ever hear. A cast of three men and two women will sing and act out Tom's music and send you home from San Francisco's Shelton Theater with a smile on your face and at least a couple of thoughts rattling around in your brain. Tom may have decided to retire from songwriting (as is rumored) "when Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize," but his humor remains as a legacy for all of us today.

Word for Word Celebrates 25 Years With Stories by Tobias Wolff & George Saunders

Buy Tickets $19 - $24 $38 - $48

Word for Word's 25th anniversary show features stories by two of America's favorite authors, Tobias Wolff and George Saunders. Wolff's Deep Kiss perfectly captures yearning adolescence: This is Joe Reed's story of his first love which nearly breaks him, yet resonates well into his middle age. In Saunders' Victory Lap, three young people are thrust toward a critical life moment, suddenly and unexpectedly converging at a single point in space and time. Humor develops into great menace, with a soul-saving ending. Joel Mullennix and Delia MacDougall direct these stories as they're brought to life on the Z Space stage in San Francisco.

Dave Damiani and the No Vacancy Orchestra are joined onstage by America's Got Talent winner Landau Murphy, Jr. for "Sinatra: Standing Room Only" -- an evening of Sinatra standards. That's also the name of their CD, that will be released by Warner Brothers Records later this month. Damiani's most recent release "#Bending the Standard" can be heard on XM71, the "Siriusly Sinatra" channel. He performs often in Atlantic City, New York, Palm Beach, Palm Springs, Las Vegas as well as his hometown of Los Angeles, where other Feinstein's at the Nikko favorites like Steve Tyrell and Spencer Day have been his special guests. Dave Damiani, Landau Murphy and the No Vacancy Orchestra are a welcome return to Feinstein's at the Nikko --their last performance on Sinatra's 99th Birthday was a total sell-out and a big hit with the crowd.

Major Moments in LGBT History, Seen From a Gay Bar

Buy Tickets $12.50 $24.99

Come Here Often? drops in on the patrons of a mythical Castro neighborhood bar, The Parlour, at three pivotal periods in the struggle of LGBT people not only to gain equal rights and protections but to literally become visible beyond the kitschy walls of gay bars. The play starts in 1977, as Harvey Milk became the first openly-gay member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, then moves to 1998, when Ellen DeGeneres came roaring out of the closet on TV, and finishes in 2018, when the world is seeing gay marriage legalized and LGBTQ people advancing across the board. Remember the past and look forward to a future that might be all right. So grab a cocktail and a seat with a good view at the Eddy Street Theatreplex in San Francisco, because The Parlour is about to open.

Steve Budd's What They Said About Love

Buy Tickets $10 $20

"What They Said About Love was funny, poignant, thoughtful and revealing about the search for love. It was an amazing performance," said Richard Connema, TalkinBroadway.com. Actor and writer Steve Budd wonders why other people can and he can't -- tie the knot, that is. So he asked couples about the push and pull of love -- what keeps them from pulling apart despite annoying the heck out of each other. Meet a New Age couple that swears they met before they met, a pair of Metal Heads who thought it would be a hoot to get married on 6-6-06 and more. Satisfy your voyeuristic tendencies about how others look for love -- and, in some cases, find it. This is documentary theater at its best, a la Anna Deavere Smith. Steve Budd brings 12 characters to life, using their words from hours of interviews, and weaves in the story of his own search for a life partner. See the show named Best of Fringe at the 2016 San Francisco Fringe Festival now at The Marsh San Francisco MainStage Theater.

Buy Tickets $22.50 - $25 $45 - $50

One of the most beloved of all operettas, and known as one of the "Big Three" of the Gilbert and Sullivan canon, The Pirates of Penzance is full of some of their most famous musical numbers, including "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General," "Poor Wand'ring One," "With Cat-Like Tread," and the glorious anthem "Hail, Poetry." Director Nicolas Aliaga frames his first production with Lamplighters through a more modern lens, emphasizing the late 19th-century concept of the "New Woman," which embraced an entirely new feminist ideal. Major-General Stanley's wards are intrepid, curious and hardy, and the pirates themselves are gentlemen whose true crime is merely casting off society's expectations; this will be a show about not doing what you are expected -- or, indeed, duty-bound -- to do! See The Pirates of Penzance at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater.

#GetGandhi: A Seriously Radical Feminist Comedy

Buy Tickets $12.50 $25

Inspired by the writings of radical feminist philosopher and theologian Mary Daly, #GetGandhi, A Seriously Radical Feminist Comedy is a world premiere, multi-character play written by award-winning playwright and actor Anne Galjour focusing on Mahatma Gandh's infamous experiments in brahmacharya, or celibacy. Gandhi would have a young woman disrobe and sleep with him completely naked as a test to prove his seminal continence and his purity of spirit. Gandhi never saw anything wrong with this practice, but a small coven of old school bra-burning San Francisco feminists do. They plot to avenge these sex crimes. They set out for the Gandhi memorial statue, located on the Embarcadero in San Francisco, to rip it from its base and drag it up Market Street in the middle of the night. Coming to Z Below.

Washed Up on the Potomac: Sandbox Series World Premiere

Order is the name of the game in a D.C. proofreading office, but everything is a bit off on this particular day. It's 90 degrees in October, a costly mistake has been made on an important account and someone is going to get fired. As three proofreaders ponder their futures, they become both haunted and inspired by memories of a coworker whose body may have recently washed up on the banks of the Potomac. Who will be the next to go? Or are they already gone? San Francisco Playhouse brings the world premiere of fun whodunit Washed Up on the Potomac to Custom Made Theatre as part of its Sandbox Series.

Youth Cast Stars in Satirical Urinetown

Buy Tickets $15 - $20 $30 - $35

In the not-so-distant future, a terrible water shortage and 20-year drought has led to a government ban on private toilets and a proliferation of paid public toilets, owned and operated by a single megalomaniac company: the Urine Good Company. If the poor don't obey the strict laws prohibiting free urination, they'll be sent to the dreaded and mysterious "Urinetown." After too long under the heel of the malevolent Caldwell B. Cladwell, the poor stage a revolt, led by a brave young hero, fighting tooth and nail for the freedom to pee "wherever you like, whenever you like, for as long as you like and with whomever you like." A brilliant satire modeled off the plays of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, Urinetown is a wickedly funny, fast-paced, and surprisingly intelligent comedic romp. See this fresh-faced production starring young actors ages 8-19 from A.C.T.'s Young Conservatory at the Strand Theater in San Francisco.

Artist Struggles to Balance Love & His Masterpiece

Buy Tickets $33 - $42 $55 - $70

The story behind one of the world's greatest artistic masterpieces comes to life in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Sunday in the Park with George. Artist Georges Seurat is obsessed with finishing his greatest work, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, at the expense of all else -- including his lover, Dot. This production at the San Francisco Playhouse traverses history, pairing Seurat's struggles with the thematically similar foibles of a contemporary descendant named George. The result is one of the most innovative musicals ever to emerge from Broadway, and a deeply personal statement on what it means to make meaningful art.
