The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas

Buy Tickets $25 $50

Both irreverent and surprisingly sentimental, The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas is the classic country-western musical comedy based on the strange-but-true story of the real-life Chicken Ranch brothel. Protected by a friendly sheriff and frequented by governors, senators, mayors and even victorious college football teams, Miss Mona's cozy bordello thrives in the small town of Gilbert -- until a puritan nemesis in the guise of a crusading do-gooder focuses his television cameras and his righteous indignation on the institution and tries to shut it down. Nominated for a passel of Tonys in its original '79 Broadway run and turned into a hit film starring Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton, this latest production comes to the Gateway Theatre in San Francisco, courtesy of 42nd Street Moon.

Sweat: New Broadway Drama About the Working Class

Buy Tickets $19 - $66 $25 - $110

Winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Sweat is the scorching new play from Lynn Nottage (Ruined) that The New York Times called "keenly observed and surprisingly funny ... throbs with heartfelt life. " In the industrial town of Reading, Pennsylvania, a group of friends spend their days on the factory floor and their nights sharing drinks, secrets and laughs. But then layoffs and picket lines begin to erode their trust, and they find themselves pitted against each other in a heart-wrenching fight for self-preservation. Based on Nottage's extensive research and interviews with residents of Reading and arriving at A.C.T. in San Francisco after a heralded Broadway run, Sweat is a searing reflection of America's economic decline.

Men on Boats: Off-Broadway Sensation About American West

Time Out New York raved, it's "a thrilling, gender-flipped slice of Manifest Destiny." This subversive tale of 10 men, four boats and two rivers contains none of the above. Pack your gear for this 21st-century telling of 19th-century American explorer and one-armed Civil War veteran John Wesley Powell, who assembles a brawny band of soldiers, trappers and adventurers to explore the waterways of the American West. Inspired by Powell's actual travel log from 1869, Jaclyn Backhaus's nimble and ingenious script is provocative, laugh-out-loud theater, performed by a cast of women who infuse America's historic myths of male conquest with a sly blast of subtext. This modern dress version begins with a prelude presenting refugee voices from modern conflicts, as far back as World War II, as recent as today's Middle East. Refugee Voices and Euripides' The Trojan Women is as relevant today as the story Euripides told. Today, there are over 65 million persons displaced by conflicts around the world. Euripides understood their plight. MET's production relates that plight to today's circumstances.

Winner of the 2002 Tony Award for Best Play, Edward Albee's The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? is about a profoundly unsettling subject: the irrational, confounding and convention-thwarting nature of love. Martin, a hugely successful architect who has just turned 50, leads an ostensibly ideal life with his loving wife and gay teenage son. But when he confides to his best friend that he is also in love with Sylvia, he sets in motion events that will destroy his family and leave his life in tatters. Albee's boundary-pushing play is puzzling, powerful, bawdy and disturbing. Dark Political Satire It Can't Happen Here

Buy Tickets $12.50 $25

A cautionary dark satire about the fragility of democracy and how fascism can take hold even in the land of liberty, the play follows the ascent of a demagogue who becomes president of the United States by promising to return the country to greatness. Witnessing the new president's tyranny from the sidelines is a liberal, middle-class newspaper editor from Vermont who trusts the system will fix itself-until he ends up in a prison camp. Sinclair Lewis' eerily prescient 1935 novel It Can't Happen Here gets a fresh update in this adaptation that examines what brings a citizenry to the point of sacrificing its own freedom and how a courageous few can prevail to overcome the fall. See this timely show at Pacifica Spindrift Players Theatre,

When Janelle relocates to Texas for the opportunity of a lifetime, she and her partner, Kane, are reminded that the consequences of being in the wrong place at the wrong time can be horrific. For three county police officers, how might those same consequences manifest themselves along racial and gender lines? Graveyard Shift is a love story about making sense (or not) of opposing ideologies, interests and truth. See this Sandbox Series premiere by Korde Tuttle at The Creativity Theatre in San Francisco.

Irma Herrera's Why Would I Mispronounce My Own Name?

Buy Tickets COMP - $10 $20

What's in a name? A minefield of misplaced notions -- some comical, some sad, and some demeaning. PlaywrightIrma Herrera's observations from the frontlines, notes from American history, and laugh out-loud humor allow us to consider what it will take for all of us to get along. When Herrera gives her name its correct Spanish pronunciation, some people assume she's a foreigner. She's not. Herrera proudly claims her Tejano roots and her Mexican and American identity as well as her native languages: Spanish and English. Her solo play Why Would I Mispronounce My Own Name? both sheds light and throws shade on our prejudices and assumptions. See it at The Marsh Upstairs Studio Theater in San Francisco.

Over a century ago, in 1911, Richard Strauss had a runaway hit with his opera Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose). The romantic comedy tells the story of a love triangle among an aristocratic lady, her young rival and the brash paramour they both desire. Filled with luxurious music and sentimental charm, its stunning orchestral textures quickly made the leap into the instrumental world of symphony, where it's been dazzling audiences ever since. Indulge your ears in this and Lalo's zesty violin showpiece Symphonie espagnole with the young firebrand Ray Chen when the San Francisco Symphony takes the stage at Davies Symphony Hall. Cristian Macelaru wields the conductor's baton.

Take a tour through San Francisco's waterfront history alongside one of its most colorful characters. Emperor Norton was a prominent businessman who lost everything on a bad investment. Instead of throwing in the towel, he responded to his failure by declaring himself "Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico." San Francisco embraced this quirky character, treating him as royalty and even accepting his self-created currency. Tour guide Joseph Amster incorporates his journalistic and acting talents to provide a one-of-a-kind tour in which he takes on the persona of Emperor Norton and introduces you to the history of the city's most unique and interesting sites through the eyes of this larger-than-life unofficial mascot. Over the course of just under three hours, you'll cover about two miles along the waterfront, from the historic Ferry Building to The Cannery.

Z Space is thrilled to have 13th Floor, one of the most exciting physical/movement oriented theater companies in the Bay Area at Z Below. What if getting struck by lightning felt so good, you wanted to do it over and over again? The storm of the century rumbles in the wings as five desperate, quirky souls attend a Lightning Strikes Anonymous meeting: John, who's been struck so many times he can't go near an ATM without shorting it out; Blake and Iris, who share an unhealthy need to hook up in empty fields when it starts to rain; Juliet, who has moved on to large appliances; and Paul, compelled to attend the meeting as part of his parole agreement. Through the fantastical stories of its unforgettable characters, Lightning Strikes Anonymous opens a new dialog about addiction and the way it's treated in American culture. Through a complex lens of darkness, humor and hope, 13th Floor uses their unique brand of “theater that won’t hold still” to explore this difficult topic with signature thoughtfulness and wit.

Born in Australia and raised in Nashville, brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone's band For King & Country specializes in worldly pop melodies with an alt-rock style. Live Free. Love Strong., which debuted at No. 1 on iTunes and picked up two Grammy Awards. They grabbed another Grammy nomination for their anthemic 2016 single "Priceless” from the indie film of the same name about human trafficking. Now For King & Country are gearing up to release their much anticipated third studio album, Burn the Ships, a sweeping musical landscape that explores themes of new beginnings, forgiveness, hope and love. He was Judy Garland's good friend and Liza Minnelli's first husband -- but, first and foremost, singer-songwriter Peter Allen was a performer. The Boy From Oz is the spectacular musical based on his life, from small-town Australia to the bright lights of New York City. The story follows Allen as he meets Garland in a Hong Kong bar, then follows her to New York and marries her daughter, despite concerns about his sexuality. The Boy From Oz played to more than a million people in Allen's home country before debuting on Broadway in 2003 with Hugh Jackman in the lead role. Placed next to each other, they form conversations, and ask us what kind of digital ghosts are we leaving behind? The audience is invited to follow the ghost of a young woman, Maggie, who has passed away in a "sudden and tragic event." Her digital persona is all that her loved ones have to remember her by. Using only those words she left behind in life, Maggie must make a journey to escape the cycle of life and death. Latin Standards was named a The New York Times "Critic's Pick" for its "winning heart and humor" and is peppered with characterizations the San Francisco Chronicle called "impossible to resist." GLAAD award winner Marga Gomez's 12th and final solo performance is the story of Gomez's late father, a blustery Cuban comedian and songwriter who insisted Marga become a doctor. As an impractical tribute to his memory, Marga defies reason and in 2012 launched a hipster comedy night at "Esta Noche," a Mission district Latino drag club with terrible Yelp reviews, during the onset of San Francisco's gentrification crisis. Her stylish girlfriend saw no potential in Marga's new project and Marga copes with getting dumped by listening for clues in the recordings of her father's "Latin Standards," dance tunes steeped in jealousy, obsession, and guitars. Described by the San Francisco Examiner as "Elegantly structured and expertly staged, it's both touching and funny".

Based on Alison Bechdel's best-selling graphic memoir, Fun Home tells the story of Alison at three different ages, alongside her uniquely dysfunctional family -- her mother, brothers and brilliant yet volatile father. Intimate, emotional and refreshingly honest, Fun Home captures the experience of seeing your parents through grown-up eyes. See this stirring production at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts.

Captivating New Play Explores Race, Boundaries & Fear

Buy Tickets COMP - $36 $45 - $60

An innocuous comment at a dinner of two interracial couples leads to a surreal escalation of Cold War-style paranoia. You Mean to Do Me Harm is a psychological exploration of Chinese and American foreign relations, and of the personal relations we hold most dear. Originally produced as part of last season's Sandbox series, this captivating new play closely examines the different perceptions we operate under and the difficulty of setting our own boundaries. See the world premiere of this "master craftsmanship of local playwright Christopher Chen" at the San Francisco Playhouse.

Buy Tickets $30 - $40 $67 - $81

Well ahead of its time for its depiction of Nora, a wife and mother whose search for self-worth leads her to leave her unhappy marriage, Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House signaled a move toward realism and feminism in theater. Now in Part 2, we'll witness what happens 15 years later when Nora shows up on that same doorstep, courtesy of up-and-coming playwright Lucas Hnath (Obie-winning The Christians, Red Speedo). Called "explosively funny" by the Hollywood Reporter, the play earned eight 2017 Tony nominations, along with raves from The New York Times as "the best play of the year." See the hit Broadway sequel to Ibsen's groundbreaking 19th-century drama, presented by Berkeley Repertory Theatre, when it comes to Roda Theatre.

An Immersive Look at a World Gone Mad

Starring internationally acclaimed actor Roger Grunwald and directed by Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle award winner Nancy Carlin, The Obligation interweaves the stories of a Polish Jew coming of age during World War II, a half-Jewish lieutenant in Hitler's army, a high-ranking SS officer, and a Jewish-American comedian (the play's Chorus) -- all brought to life onstage in Grunwald's tour-de-force performance. This celebrated work, a remount of the 2017 production back by popular demand for a limited engagement, offers a provocative and timely look into the corrosive moral dilemmas of World War II and the Holocaust: a time when the unimaginable was the norm and survival depended on the right choice, guile, and sheer luck. "Grunwald is riveting," raves The New York Times. See The Obligation at the Potrero Stage in San Francisco.
