Pinter's The Birthday Party With Judith Ivey

Buy Tickets $17 - $75 $22 - $125

Two-time Tony-winner Judith Ivey (Hurlyburly, Will & Grace, Grey's Anatomy) stars in Harold Pinter's darkly comic classic at the Geary Theater in San Francisco. When asked what his surrealist plays were really all about, the Nobel and Tony-winning playwright famously replied, "the weasel under the cocktail cabinet." Whether you prefer that definition, or describe it as a "comedy of menace," The Birthday Party is pure Pinter. It revolves around Petey, Meg and their long-time tenant Stanley, a retired pianist, who lead a quiet life at a seaside boarding house ... until two strangers show up. Their presence turns Stanley's surprise birthday celebration into something much more sinister, which includes a high-stakes game of blindman's bluff and a mysterious blackout. A.C.T. favorite Marco Barricelli and Stratford Fest star Scott Wentworth appear in the company's new production.

Whether it's 1892 or 2018, Nobel Prize-winning writer George Bernard Shaw's scathingly satirical comedies still have the uncanny power to provide pointed commentary on what's happening in the here and now. In Widowers' Houses, an idealistic young doctor is dismayed to learn that his new girlfriend happens to be the daughter of a predatory real-estate speculator, but that's just the first difficult pill he has to swallow. Shaw penned more than 60 plays, including classics like Saint Joan and Pygmalion, but this socially-aware comedy was his first to be staged. This remarkably modern play centers on unscrupulous tycoon Harry Brock, who, accompanied by his ex-showgirl mistress, heads off to Washington to purchase a few congressmen. Brock hires a journalist to soften Billie's rough edges for D.C. society, but the tables turn when Brock discovers that a little learning can be a dangerous thing. Chances are if you at all listen to podcasts, you've devoured S-Town. And if you don't, well, after this event, you'll undoubtedly start. Produced by Serial and This American Life, this investigative journalism podcast, hosted and co-created by Brian Reed, takes you to a small town in Alabama, where you meet John B. McLemore. This quirky, frustrating and heartbreaking antiquarian horologist believes a murder has been committed in his hometown -- but that's only the beginning. In Creating S-Town: A New Way to Tell a Story, Brian Reed and executive producer Julie Snyder come to San Francisco's Curran theater to take you behind the scenes of the groundbreaking (and record-breaking) podcast. You'll hear audio outtakes and details that didn't make it into the final version as the creators reveal just what went into making S-Town the phenomenon it became.

Don Reed's Solo Show Kipling Hotel: The '80s

Buy Tickets $10 $20

Don Reed's Kipling Hotel picks up where his acclaimed hit East 14th leaves off and details his misadventures of the 1980s. As the awkward son of an Oakland pimp who's struggling to work his way through college, Reed attempts to make a living as a stripper and a gigolo, but ends up with the not-so-glamorous job as a live-in waiter at a retirement hotel. It wasn't all bad, though. While serving breakfast to the elderly, drifters and drug addicts, Reed mined comedy gold. His voice has been heard on Spiderman, Johnny Quest, SNL and most recently as the cat on 2 Broke Girls. He's written, directed, produced and starred in short films for HBO Shorts and was the warm-up comedian for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno for over 1,000 episodes. Don't miss the latest show from this 2017 San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle nominee when he takes the stage at The Marsh.

Flipping the tables on film noir tropes, solo performer Jill Vice's A Fatal Step tells its shadowy tale not from the point of view of a hardboiled detective, but from that of the femme fatale, those sultry - and deadly - bombshells at the heart of the genre. An SF Fringe Festival Best of Fest winner, Vice (Tipped & Tipsy) combines "an impressive array of body language and vocal talent" (Huffington Post) in her original shows. This one-woman noir centers on Sarah, who decides to take matters into her own hands when another woman dares to come between her and her handsome podiatrist. A Fatal Step has already taken home the Audience Choice award at IndyFringe, and now it comes to The Marsh.

Playwright Dominique Morisseau's ferocious hometown pride inspired her to write The Detroit Project, a trilogy of dramas set at three distinct periods in the city's history. Skeleton Crew centers on Detroit during the 2008 recession. Faye has spent her career at one of the last auto-stamping plants in Detroit, Shanita is pregnant, Dez has a whole future to plan, and their manager Reggie owes a nearly un-payable debt to his work family. As rumors of a plant shutdown begin to spread, these tight-knit workers face what they're willing to sacrifice to survive. Find out for yourself why The New York Times hailed Skeleton Crew as "a deeply moral and deeply American play" when it comes to the stage of Mill Valley's Marin Theatre Company.

Posa's affectionate and amazingly accurate tribute re-creates the late legend's signature look and sharp-tongued style of straight-talk comedy, in which she delighted in skewering both celebrities and her own persona, while Tripoli kicks off the show by sharing some of his fondest and funniest memories of working with the star.

But when he finds a mysterious hat in his girlfriend's apartment, it sends him back down the path of destruction. Written by Stephen Adly Guirgis, The Motherf**ker With the Hat is a ferociously funny play filled with memorable characters and acid-tongued dialogue that provides a gleefully vulgar glimpse at the complicated process of recovery from love and other addictions. Agave Baroque: Charpentier in Rome

Buy Tickets $15 $30

Italian music and style was so dominant throughout much of the 17th century, musicians from all over the world flocked to Italy to learn the secrets and absorb the style. Marc-Antoine Charpentier studied in Rome and was heavily influenced by Giacomo Carissimi. Meanwhile, the French musical scene, which was dominated by Jean-Baptiste Lully (who was himself Italian), provides the backdrop for this delightful fantasy about Lully and the great Italian violinist Arcangelo Corelli meeting and creating "a new perfection in music" as a part of a "great style reunion." Marin Baroque presents Agave Baroque -- with guest soprano soloist Jennifer Paulino -- performing a program featuring motet pairings by Carissimi and Charpentier, Tartini's and Clérambault's treatment of Dido's lament, and Jean-Fery Rebel's adaptation of the Italian style, as well as Francois Couperin's sublime Apothéose de Lully. Enjoy Charpentier in Rome at the First Presbyterian Church of San Anselmo. A complimentary wine reception follows the concert.

Emperor Norton's Fantastic San Francisco Waterfront Tour

Buy Tickets $15 $30

Take a tour through San Francisco's waterfront history alongside one of its most colorful characters. Emperor Norton was a prominent businessman who lost everything on a bad investment. Instead of throwing in the towel, he responded to his failure by declaring himself "Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico." San Francisco embraced this quirky character, treating him as royalty and even accepting his self-created currency. Tour guide Joseph Amster incorporates his journalistic and acting talents to provide a one-of-a-kind tour in which he takes on the persona of Emperor Norton and introduces you to the history of the city's most unique and interesting sites through the eyes of this larger-than-life unofficial mascot. Over the course of just under three hours, you'll cover about two miles along the waterfront, from the historic Ferry Building to The Cannery.

Gossip Girl Destroys Lives in The Children's Hour

Showcasing the destructive power of lies, The Children's Hour depicts the experiences of the headmistresses of a girls' boarding school who're accused of conducting an illicit lesbian relationship by a bratty, compulsively lying student to disastrous effect. Banned from stages in London and Boston when it first debuted in 1934, the play's gay themes represent a significant milestone in American letters and an important piece of the contemporary American theater repertoire. Led by a terrifically talented cast including Laura Peterson (2017's Bus Stop), Lillian Hellman's classic comes to The Barn Theater in Ross, courtesy of the Ross Valley Players.
