Adam Ant: Post-Punk Legend

Buy Tickets $25 $53.75

In celebration of the 35th anniversary of his landmark album Kings of the Wild Frontier, Adam Ant hits the road for his North American Anthems: The Singles tour, which brings him to The Masonic in San Francisco. On a Thursday night in 1980, millions of living rooms across the U.K. were set on fire by a blazing TV performance by Adam and the Ants. Through a haze of smoke, the new face of punk appeared, with war paint on his face and an outfit inspired by late 1700s fashion. Adam Ant proceeded to snarl, tease and taunt the viewers until he had secured his place as the next new wave sensation. With his "warrior pop" sound and eccentric stage persona, Adam Ant and his groundbreaking post-punk rock group found success with a string of chart-topping hits, including "Stand and Deliver" and "Dog Eat Dog." After the band broke up, Ant propelled his unique, dynamic sound into a solo career that has spanned six albums and more than 30 years.

Hamlet: Madness in Shakespeare's Greatest Tragedy

Buy Tickets $12 - $62 $15 - $102

Without a doubt the most famous play in the English language, Hamlet is much more than a collection of quotable lines, like the legendary soliloquy that begins with "To be or not to be?" It's also a thrilling tale of political intrigue, murder, madness and duels to the death. Hamlet is one of theater's greatest anti-heroes, caught between his duty as a son and his desire for moral purity. He is haunted by the rage-filled ghost of his father, who won't rest until his death is avenged. Even worse, every time Hamlet hesitates to take action, it's his friends and loved ones that pay the price. With a cast led by Tony Award-nominee John Douglas Thompson, this will be an unforgettable theatrical event at the A.C.T. theater in San Francisco.

Among the familiar faces you might see spoofed at this Club Fugazi production: Lady Gaga, Barack and Michelle Obama, Kate Middleton and Adele. Reefer Madness: The Musical Based on Campy Classic Film

Buy Tickets $17.50 - $30 $35 - $40

In 1936, an anti-drug propaganda film called Reefer Madness was released, portraying the disasters that ensue when some teenagers decide to try "marijuana" -- otherwise known as the devil's drug. In the 1970s, the film was rediscovered and became a cult classic due to its over-the-top portrayal of the alleged dangers of smoking weed, which include death, destruction, madness and ... jazz. Inspired by the original film, this tongue-in-cheek musical comedy continues the hijinks in an even wackier form, memorializing the melodrama in songs that range from Broadway-style showstoppers to swing tunes. It would be a big mistake to (puff, puff) pass on this production of Reefer Madness: The Musical at Victoria Theatre in San Francisco.

Blue & Gold Fleet's Escape From the Rock Cruise is an exciting 90-minute excursion that takes you around the perimeter of Alcatraz to view the island from every angle. As the ship sails, passengers are treated to a presentation complete with sound effects and chilling tales of inmates Al Capone and Billy Cook, not to mention Clyde Johnson's daring escape attempt. This historical yet entertaining boat trip does not stop at the island of Alcatraz itself, but it does evoke the days when this iconic maximum-security prison was the most feared institution in the American penal system.

Don Reed's Latest Solo Show: Kipling Hotel: The '80s

The Kipling Hotel: True Misadventures of the Electric Pink '80s picks up where Don Reed's lauded hit East 14th leaves off in the '70s. As the awkward son of an Oakland pimp who is struggling to work his way through college, Reed attempts to make a living as a stripper and a gigolo, but ends up with the not-so-glamorous job as a live-in waiter at a retirement hotel. It wasn't all bad, though. While serving breakfast to the elderly, various drifters and drug addicts, Reed mined comedy gold for this new solo show at The Marsh Berkeley. A longtime warm-up comedian for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Reed's immersive and hysterical stories about his Oakland upbringing earned him the Performance of the Year award from NPR's storytelling show Snap Judgment.

A modern American family gathers in a local park to roast one of its own over the coals in the play by Obie-winner Robert O'Hara. The hard-partying, foul-mouthed O'Mallery family stages an intervention for their drug-addicted sister. While they wait for her, they drink, smoke and dredge up old feuds and grudges. The family soon finds all its problems dragged out in public. Barbecue at San Francisco Playhouse overturns our assumptions about race, poverty and the American family in hilarious and incisive fashion.

In this new play presented by the San Francisco Scottish Rite, the American Revolution has just ended, and General George Washington is a national hero. No group is more proud of Washington's accomplishments than the Masonic lodges of the newly formed United States of America. Throughout the war, Washington surrounded himself with fellow masons as his trusted advisors. The Traitor depicts a dream by Benedict Arnold, who was also a general in the war but later defected to the British forces. In his dream, Brother Washington is being honored at a Masonic lodge meeting. By chance, a former British officer and his aide also attend the meeting. Vivid memories and warm feelings prevail ... until the topic of betrayal and espionage is raised. Explore the role played by the Masons in our nation's development, from the positive to the more destructive and self-centered.

Cabaret: The Sexy, Dark Broadway Classic

Buy Tickets $13.50 - $16 $27 - $32

"There was a cabaret, and there was a master of ceremonies and there was a city called Berlin in a country called Germany. It was the end of the world ... and I was dancing with Sally Bowles and we were both fast asleep." So speaks the protagonist of this groundbreaking musical, ever so prescient in our current political climate. Set in 1931 at the dawn of the Nazi era, Cabaret revolves around young American writer Cliff Bradshaw and his relationship with Kit Kat Klub chanteuse Sally Bowles. This chilling classic reminds us that if we are not vigilant, the darkest parts of history are doomed to repeat themselves. Featuring a live orchestra and filled with some of the most memorable songs in theater history, including "Cabaret," Willkomen," and "Maybe This Time," Cabaret remains one of the sexiest, and most shocking, in the Broadway cannon. See it at the Barn Theatre outside of San Francisco, courtesy of Ross Valley Players.
